GOLD FOR COZ IN OZ

by Bob Cozens

I arrived in Sydney two days before competition and didn't get off to a good start.  I had a a touch of vertigo caused by an ear infection.  On my first day I went to Olympic Park to register which was easy.  It was when, on the same day, I went to the track to jog and get my legs in shape after the long flight when I became dizzy and fell over.  The dizziness stayed with me all that day and for a few days after.  My first event was the 800m.  I never had a chance and ran lousy.  The 400m was next.  I got through the heats , but didn't feel 100%; however I managed a third place behind Mack Stewart and Malcom Fraser of New Zealand in the final.

Two days later I was on top of my game for the  200m.  I was second fastest qualifier which gave me an ideal lane (#3) in the final - I could see all my competition.  When the gun went off I had a good feeling.  I got away slow, but manage to to take the field at the 100m mark and sped away with 50m to go.  It was a great day.

Editors note:  World Veteran Games October 18, 2009. Congratulations Bob!
